Bob McGinn is back.
The podcast. The draft coverage. "McGinn Files" columns. Subscribers can expect everything once again here at Go Long this 2024 season.
Good morning, readers!
The 2024 NFL Season kicks off this week. We’ll have two more season-preview features rolling out at Go Long, as well as a detailed plan of attack for the season. But first, I’m thrilled to share some news:
Hall of Famer Bob McGinn is BACK at Go Long for another season.
My cohort at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel a decade ago has made our longform site home since Sept. 2021.
New here? McGinn truly is 1 of 1 in this business.
The Escanaba, Mich., native covered the Green Bay Packers/NFL over six different decades: the Green Bay Press-Gazette (1975- ‘91), Milwaukee Journal (1991- ‘95), Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (1995- ‘17), BobMcGinnFootball.com (2017- ‘19) and The Athletic (2019- ‘21). In 2011, McGinn received the Bill Nunn Memorial Award (formerly the McCann Award) for his long and distinguished career reporting on pro football, earning him a spot in the writer’s wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. He’s also the author of “The Ultimate Super Bowl Book,” which is exceptional.
Of course, Bob is far more than a writer and a reporter. I could not have dreamt of a better mentor as a young sports writer.
We hit it off on the “Packers Podcast” while covering the team together at the Journal Sentinel — back in the infancy of podcasting itself. (Microwaved coffee ‘n all, McGinn fully educated me on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald.)
Here at Go Long, we picked up where we left off with the “Ty & Bob Pod.”
Once again, this weekly show will be exclusive to our paid subscribers. These days, McGinn lives near Ann Arbor, Mich., and has his eyes focused on the entire NFC North. This season promises to be a wild ride with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers both thinking Super Bowl, the Chicago Bears ushering in the Caleb Williams Era and the Minnesota Vikings always unpredictably entertaining.
There are film junkies… then there’s Bob.
He’ll help you see a completely new game.
Our episodes always hover around two hours long so we’ll have plenty of time to discuss and debate all relevant NFL topics.
McGinn’s unparalleled draft coverage will continue at Go Long. He’s in constant communication with scouts across the league. The last three years’ worth of series are all linked at the “Draft” tab on our home page. For 40 years, he’s delivered the good, bad and ugly on prospects unlike anyone else. Our goal is to bring you as close as possible to real and raw pro football. Scouts and execs supply such honesty.
Readers can expect his “McGinn Files” column to continue. These look back at how players today were viewed by scouts when they were drafted… with a modern twist. Here’s how Travis Kelce went from “dumb ass” to all-time great.
And you just never know when McGinn is going to drop a bombshell. He reported on our podcast Feb. 17, 2023 that the Packers were finished with Aaron Rodgers. In the face of much media skepticism, he was proven correct.
Chances are, subscribers will learn something new this season on the pod.
Go Long is your completely independent home for NFL longform journalism. Thanks to you, we don’t rely on ads or sponsors or corporations of any kind into Season No. 5.
