Was any thought given to keeping Jones along with Jacobs? It seems they could have done better than what Aaron got from Minnesota. Unless they are saving some for a linebacker...and perhaps Jones was p.o.'d enough that GB wasn't getting him no how, no way.

Perhaps, if the team is as close as Gutey thinks, they should do something at place-kicker.

So the difference between having potentially the most potent RB duo in the league - including one who was the heart and soul of team, claim made per the GM himself,- was $1 million. Dogmatism strikes a blow.

Two of the most preposterous statements of '24.

Rogers: "I think we can all understand. People are coming here to play with me."

T: "Fontenot signed FA Mooney. We should expect fireworks."

Taking the others into account! London, Bijan, Pitts -- this time -- used properly. (This still made me laugh.)

Jacobs averaged 3.5 yards per carry last year. Yes he’s younger, but he doesn’t have the burst that Jones has. Moving over to Kirk Cousins, he’s the very definition of mediocrity. He fleeced the Vikings’ Rick Speilman twice on contracts. Kwesi Adolfo Mensa refused to extend him last year, thankfully. Lifetime, Kirk Cousins is 16-47 against teams with winning records. No fat paycheck can erase that. Happy that Danielle Hunter received the big payday he was looking for, getting $47 million guaranteed over two years from Houston. A Vikings third-round pick almost a decade ago, Hunter made himself into a top 10 edge rusher during his career. Last season, at age 29, he logged 16.5 sacks. Glad he left the division. Detroit was rumored to be interested in him. Based on a handful of games on the back end of the season, the Packers think they have the next great NFL quarterback in Jordan Love. Sorry to burst your green and gold bubble, but he’s not that yet. Some of the bad decisions he made last year are going to surface in 2024. In time, maybe he will become another Favre or Rodgers, but it won’t be next year.

Fair points all 'round. I think this is why Bob was particularly critical in the pod wrapping up the season. It's hard to get back to *that* moment with *that* QB. So much can go wrong. It'll be hard for Love to duplicate but the team around him should be better (and healthier). I like his chances.

Packers screwed up the Jones/Jacobs thing. They weren't planning on taking a top FA RB, but after Jones said no to their paycut demand, they went for Jacobs, who's younger but not as good as Jones. Their final offer was $4MM base with $2MM in incentives. He accepted the Vikings offer of $6MM base with $1MM in incentives. Packers end up paying $12MM+ for Jacobs instead of keeping Jones makes no sense.

I mean...maybe, but that is total guesswork on your part. Just as easy to see it as Gutey targeting Jacobs as the younger, more powerful back and, after securing him, setting a modest price to keep Jones that Rosenhaus rejected. There are all kinds of ways to look at last year to fit your opinion, but I gotta think the Packers management just clearly favored Jacobs over Jones moving forward. Time will tell.

I think Gutey's biggest takeaway from the 2023 season is that LaFleur's offense, with a quarterback willing to take snaps under center, not bothered by pre-snap motion and willing to run the play called in by LaFleur, is a great offense for running the ball. As dynamic as Jones can be, Gutey certainly took into consideration of Jones' age and his missed games. The biggest issue from Gutey's standpoint was the chasm in talent between RB1 and RB2.

Certainly Gutey and Drew Rosenhaus had been negotiating for weeks with no clear progress. I applaud Gutey for acting quickly to grab Jacobs, at least the 2nd best FA back. At draft picks 41 and 58, Gutey may grab one of the top 3 college RBs. Dillon just re-signed for veteran's minimum. He may not even make the team if GB drafts an RB.

At this point, the best we can hope is Jacobs gains 1300 yards on a 12-5 Packers squad and Jones shines on a 6-11 Vikings team.
