This has been a strange offseason in Big D. But those who've had a front-row seat in Jerry's World know it's no coincidence the NFCCG-less streak is at 28 years. ("It doesn’t ever really change.")
Another good story all the way through, young man. Held my interest by the throat from start to finish. Will circle back and read the three-parter on the Cowboys GoLongTD published a few years ago.
Appreciate it, Rog! I’m not so sure Zim will be the cure-all in Big D. You surely remember the good in his scheme but players, repeatedly, describe a coach who lost an ability to relate.
Really interesting piece. I think the failure to lock in their key players ahead of the market resetting value is such a huge and obvious mistake it borders on gross negligence.
Even putting Dak aside, there is no universe where they won't want to resign Lamb. Inaction will cost them 5 to 10m more a year. Or lack at Parsons. Eagles have already extended Smith who was drafted just after him and locked him down at value compared to the new market.
Best thing about extending proven successful 3 year players is you still get the last few years of them at affordable price of the end of their rookie deal and their new contract will be good valu when jt kicks in while they get certainly of life changing wealth.
We have to think that even Stephen Jones comes around and pays both Lamb and Prescott. And all of the excess cash it costs to meet the market could’ve been used on a player or two in March who help close the NFC gap. I guess it’s hard to quantify what that number is — only the Cowboys would know — but it’s a gigantic error this regime has made many times over.
In the series linked, a source explains how badly Dallas mishandled Dez Bryant’s contract. He’s convinced the team ruined Dez and might be right.
Love seeing Dallas floundering, but your big lead that they haven't thrown enough money at Day-1 free agents as the reason for their failure seems a little questionable. Occasionally it makes sense (like the Packers securing their Safety position) but frequently it's a long-term drag.
Dak is kind-of like Cousins in Washington, maybe not great, but they'd miss him when he was gone.
I think it's a fine line. Probably was smart for Jerry to be constrained after that crazy Roy Williams trade but a handful of these recent contenders sure could've used one more piece. To use the Packers as an example, I'm sure even the late-great Ted wishes he pulled the trigger on a vet or two.
Thank you for the link to the three-part series you did on Dallas a few years ago. Loved the Cosmo Kramer’s busy season reference and the link to the racy photos of Jerry Jones and those women. That’s Gold, Tyler, Gold! Whether it’s the GoLongTD pods, or the deep dives via the sparkling long-story form pieces, or the universe of people you know who help fertilize your site’s varied content, GoLongTD is in full flower. When my renewal notice arrives, I may tip you. Maybe. Maybe not, but really good work, Tyler. Can’t speak for all your readers, but you’re delivering honest value.
As a Dallas hater I should have read this earlier. Its just that there's TOO much Cowboys coverage. But it looks like theyre hitting a ceiling, with Lions and Packers rising...and when march 2025 comes they can't keep everyone.
Still their determination to draft elite OL first round is genius. Since 2014 the Cowboys have been a pain in the ass because they can open holes and QBs have time.
As a 49ers fan, I extra appreciate this piece.

Exactly. Perfectly said.

I did not know withered is the same as whittled. Who would have thunk.

The question always is Which One. And then maybe who would we not have? But as in most things: Everything in Moderation !
Regardless of the business, micromanagement is the popular answer for the micromanager alone. That ilk is miserable to work for.
