I've followed Bob for 30 years. At times he is spot on. At times he can be overly critical. Jaire is not a bum. He was and is the top CB on the team. No, he didn't have a good game vs. Carolina. No he hasn't had a good 2023. Yes, he has a bad attitude. But Ty, you spelled it out. In 2022, he didn't cover Jefferson man on man in the opening Minnesota game, and Jefferson got like 180 yards and 2 TDs in a DOMINATING performance. Jaire covered him 1:1 in the 2nd game and he got one catch.
The Packers challenge now is to TRY to get Jaire back to top form in 2024 with a new DC. It is possible.
Another thing: Bob said if the Packers have a losing season in 2023, it will be 3 losing seasons in 6 years, more evidence that Gutey and MLF are average, not good, not bad, but just average. Well, I GUESS this would be true...but he neglected to mention the fact that in the other 3 seasons they won THIRTEEN GAMES. Does that sound like average? My take is they are both above average. 2022 they realized their QB had hit the "old man wall" and they got rid of him. 2023 is an expected rebuilding season with a new young QB. Let's see how they do in 2024 before throwing Gutey and MLF under the "only average" bus.
PLUS, Ty, you and Bob have spent the last 2 seasons making the case that Aaron Rodgers was going downhill, was a prima donna and the Packers should move on. I AGREED. SO I will NOT say the only reason they won 13 games 3 years in a row was Rodgers. He was a lot of it but coaching and a good GM were part of it. Bob doesn't make sense if he said ARod wasn't the sole reason the won 13 games 3x but MLF and Gutey are only average. If all of this was true, they would have only won 8 or 9 games a year the last 6 years. But they won 13 3x. Again, my take was Rodgers was very good but Gutey and MLF also contributed to those seasons & are therefore above average. Gutey had great drafts the last 2 years and made the GUTSY and CORRECT decision to move on from Rodgers. I have to agree with SSgCujo that Bob is approaching curmudgeon status with his opinion on Gutey and MLF.
This post is nearly as good as an article. I appreciate the close and critical listening. It's also a good challenge for Bob to provide more support about his general conclusions on Gutey and MLF. Certainly he can make these claims about the two being average, and though he's in semi-retirement, I'd look forward to an analysis with more tangible defense. How do you evaluate a GM's drafting and FA handling? Is there a formula? The Smith Bros signings were excellent at the time. Amos was a good signing and so was Douglas and Campbell. The resigning of Campbell was not.
Drafting? He's hit on 1/3 of his firsts: Jaire, Gary and Love. Wyatt looks mediocre and Walker is still tbd but could be better if he wasn't trusted with the dot. Is a GM just as good if he finds a late round starter rather than his 3rd rounder becoming the starter? (Rasheed Walker vs Rhyan). This draft looks like his signature draft with two starting TEs, two possible starting WRs, a kicker and a potentially good starting CB and maybe one rotational DL.
Regarding Jaire, they should probably trade him and my guess is that they will and all this 'welcoming him back' sweet talk is to make sure his trade value doesn't drop below a 2nd. Is he soft? Sure looks like it. How many DBs out there cover exceptionally and tackle well though?
I agree with Tyler that the Love pick was creative and bold thinking. So was drafting three more WRs this year after taking two in the 2nd and 4th last year. On a side note, it looks like Bob is finally giving Romeo the credit he deserves. My guess is that Romeo will be one of the more underrated WRs in the league for awhile as he's not explosive--just strong and dependable---and quietly put together a great career in Milwaukee. In the meantime, we'll always be talking about Watson who is one go route away from his next hammy problem.
I think you can evaluate MLF by following the smoke on veteran discontent. Clearly they see that something is wrong about the leadership. At a minimum, they see it as weak. Otherwise they wouldn't speak and act out like this. So for me, this is MLF's greatest challenge and a test of his leadership. Will he be able to have the team continue to buy in when players with big voices are challenging that authority. And it isn't just one side of the ball. Bakhtiari already was sending out snarky notes of discontent.
Actually, Ty challenged Bob on three occasions in this podcast and Bob disagreed with Ty's loose statement on ownership advantages. But hey, we'd like more of this because the truth is found in argument where one has to defend their ideas. Agreeing just leads to lazy conclusions. And you can agree but still disagree within the agreement in order to get to the real insights. And I don't think Go Long will take that next step forward until they become more comfortable disagreeing with each other, sharpening iron with iron like Jaire on Davante.
Bob basically said this guy is a bum. I get it, he had a bad game. PFF had him the #1 rated CB in 2020, #8 in 2022. So he's not a bum. I do remember him get hurt in a game against the Steelers taking on a 250# running back, which helped the team win the game. So maybe Alexander hasn't been able to tackle the way he once did. Maybe he's afraid he'll get hurt again. Bob is a dinosaur, come on! Comparing old Packers to what happens now. I also love how he likes to kiss the Loins asses! Wow! They've been picking in the top ten in the draft for the last twenty years! They also got a ton of picks for Stafford. I knew Bob used to be good, not so much anymore. Just an old curmudgeon.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to both of you once again. Good points throughout. Great that you guys really speak your mind and have something to back it up. Bob, you put a lot of work into this week’s McGinn Memory. It was a blast!
I listened to this late but thank you Bob for stating the obvious: what makes any one think that even if Joe Barry is fired (and he should be asap) that LaFleur can hire a competent DC that could implement a scheme that wasn’t vanilla and weak? I’m skeptical as hell about this.
I'm so excited about the Packers long-term prospects with Love and this young offense. Yes the defense is a mess, but it can only get better with a new coordinator (I mean, how could it get worse). Hopefully they can sign some free agents to the D, plus 5 picks in the top 100. And yet Ty and Bob (more Bob tbh) act like the franchise is in a terrible state. I just don't get that.

Tyler how long does it take for you to get your nose out of McGinn’s ass? Your repeated saccherin fawning makes my teeth hurt.
And a very Merry Christmas to you, too!
You’re a good sport Tyler

I admit I was being a bit snarky but your point is well taken.

McGinn has never liked Jaire so this ought to be fair and balanced lol!!

Detroit needs a QB. They’re probably OK next year but soon after they’re going to need a young guy to step in. Or they could sign Flacco. 😎
Good take as usual by both Bob & Tyler - can no longer let the imates run the asylum!

Looks from these comments like the Jaire Alexander Fan Club found Go Long. Nice.
Excellent breakdown again by Bob. Felt like Alexander played awful in that game but interesting to hear it confirmed from the film.
Also enjoyed the respect for Wayne and Larry. They are outstanding, and a lot of fun to listen too, as well.
What three dots are you referring to? I'm not sure what sync to my Apple account does for either of us, but was confused at your instruction.
