Good article, but it didn't need to include your opinion that "Playing video games is a senseless time-suck beyond the age of 21." Everyone has their hobbies and ways to unwind, almost like the senseless time-suck of spending Sundays enjoying watching a game we've all grown to love. There are pro video game players getting paid to be the best at their craft, just like any professional sport. Sure, like anything it can be abused, and a lot of people use video games as a form of escapism. But to suggest it's childish is pretty ignorant in my opinion. Like anything, there is an insane amount of nuance to it, especially at the highest levels of competition.

You are absolutely right. Many of my friends love it for rec, too. Consider the jab a tongue-in-cheek troll!

Will do. Probably just a little defensive after watching some professional eSports on a Sunday night to fill the gap until football season. Keep up the good work Tyler.

I am incredibly ignorant on the subject, that's for sure. Here's a Q&A we did with Kurt Benkert last year. He actually did open my eyes on it -- especially on how folks like watching other people play video games: https://www.golongtd.com/p/meet-the-most-interesting-man-in

And cannot you -- and everyone here -- enough for reading!

Great article, love the deep dives into players. I've followed Bob McGinn around the last few years which brought me here, but I have a feeling I'll stick around for the content after he moves on/retires (which is hopefully not for the foreseeable future).

Love watching him zig and zag. He may be a SB caliber QB but he won’t win one unless he’s surrounded with elite talent and a creative OC. Pat Mahomes didn’t do it by himself. He had Andy Reid designing schemes and Hill + Kelce completing them.

Strong take. I like Kingsbury more than most and am chalking up last season’s swoon to Hopkins’ injury more than anything.

Nahhhh. Can you think of one Super Bowl winning QB who “doesn’t talk?” It’s a sign of immaturity. Just like being contracted to study. All the talent in the world but he isn’t winning anything until he grows up.

One last thing Ty: I know it’s waaaay before your time but the Cardiac Cards of Don Coryell and Jim Hart were pretty damn good for a few years.

Tyler, I really enjoy your writing as well as the tremendous work you’ve put into Go Long. But to paraphrase a line from a truly great film, I’m not sure I agree with your police work here. Kyler is a supremely gifted athlete and an above-average NFL quarterback and I can state that without reservation. There is, however, a substantial difference between a “winner” (as Mr. Hogan, who comes across as more agent or publicist than coach, would have it) and a “frontrunner”. In order to beat the good teams when it counts, in order to win in the NFL playoffs, in order to be “truly great”, a quarterback needs more than talent, pedigree and the oohs and ahhs produced by highlight reels. He needs a sharp mind and, even more importantly, the willingness to dedicate himself mentally to things no player in the league is above: leadership, making teammates better and, yes, film study. Without making that extra effort Kyler will not in my opinion, and I agree with Monos on this one, ever quarterback the Cardinals franchise to a Super Bowl victory.
