I will probably be in the minority here, but the ban on the hip drop tackle, is absolutely the right thing to do, for two reasons. One, it is a dangerous way of tackling, which injures the player being tackled, and possibly ends his career. Two, it is a technically unsound way of tackling. I don’t believe there’s a defensive coach out there who teaches his defensive players to wrap their arms around the ball, carrier’s hips and swing your legs under his legs and pull him to the ground. Technically, that is, a completely unsound way of teaching somebody to tackle, and coaches don’t teach that. This type of tackling was banned for the same reason why the horse collar tackle was banned. The physics behind both tackles are exactly the same. It forces the ballcarrier to hold up the weight of the tackler and the ball carrier Legs are swept under by the tacklers legs, often times getting pinned to the turf and causing ankle and knee injuries. The proper way of tackling is to strike with your shoulder pad, snap your hips through the man, wrap your arms and run your feet. And to all of the defensive players, who were complaining about this, would they be open to bringing back the chop block and the clip block? Both of those blocks were taken out of the game because they exposed the defensive player to unnecessary injuries.

The JJ McCarthy thing is a joke - I’ve watched him play and he is fine for a running college team like Michigan but he is not NFL material - much less a number two pick. The chickification of football marches on - everything with any manliness is being neutered, from cars to football.
