I 100% signed up and paid for this site just to hear Bob's unfiltered draft analysis. I see no reason to defend yourself Bob. You are the absolute BEST! Great job...again. FYI, I paid for JSOnline until you left, I paid for your site, I paid for The Athletic (that will be canceled soon), and now I pay for Go Long. I'm here as long as you are. Tyler, no disrespect. I enjoyed you at JSO and I'm sure I'll enjoy content outside of Bob's draft breakdown but ya gotta keep him.

Such a joke that Rodgers can't be bothered to show up for voluntary workouts when he just lost the NFL's best WR and has three rookies and a new FA to start working with. ANY time spent with them can only be beneficial. But I'm not surprised.

Odd. I seem to have missed the “hearty debate.”

This was my letter just sent to Mark Murphy after bashing him last year during the Rodgers saga. It’s a mea culpa because nobody’s done better than GB and Gutey since Rodgers called them out and asked for a trade. I LOVE last week’s draft..

to MurphyTakes5@packers.com

Note of Gratitude-and an apology

Dear Mr Murphy,

I am writing to apologize for being so critical of you and your GM during the Rodgers drama last offseason and to express gratitude and appreciation for the job you’ve done since you overhauled the team’s leadership structure. In retrospect those changes were needed and essential for the success of the team.

Last year’s offseason was clearly a very tumultuous and difficult time for you and Gutey with a lot going on behind the scenes that we as fans will never know and you and Mr Gutekunst handled it with aplomb and class.

There is an old saying that “iron sharpens iron”and Rodgers taking his game to another level since a QB was drafted in the first round in 2020 is perhaps a good example of this. But another example may be Brian Gutekunst’s stunning performance as GM since the infamous story came out last year that a certain HOF QB wanted him fired.

The astoundingly successful additions of De’Vondre Campbell and Rasul Douglas and subsequent resignings were nothing short of masterful (kudos to Russ Ball too:)).

Using both first rounders last week on the all-important defensive front seven and trading up for a prototypical “ Loften-esque” WR in the second round I thought were ingenious moves-despite a lack of “consensus” approval from respected football writers and talking heads such as Bob McGinn and Peter King.

I believe trading the soon to be 30 year old and oft-injured Adams and then parlaying those two Round 1 picks toward aggressive enforcers in the front seven and then targeting the needed WR in Round 2 will prove to be what put Green Bay over the top by subtly transforming their identity into a tougher, more punishing and faster team.

I’ve watched the Packers since the lowly 1970’s teams and watched the MNF game when Lynn Dickey’s underdog Packers beat the Mark Murphy-strong safetied Super Bowl Redskins on a missed Mark Moseley kick in a wild scorefest.

In retrospect, your career as a successful and tough NFL player may not have sufficiently been taken into account when doubts were raised about whether you could successfully transition from full time administrator to overseeing both the business side and football operations. You were uniquely qualified from being a team leader on the perennially contending Redskins in formulating your vision for sustained team success with the Packers and laying the groundwork for their unmatched record over the past three years. Everyone knows attaining a Super Bowl title needs strong leadership to find good talent and create a culture of accountability while providing an optimal environment for people to reach their potential. But as evidenced by the last few post-seasons, football championships also require a fair bit of luck- especially with injuries and the timing of injuries. Regardless of what happens from now on in terms of team wins and losses, I believe your legacy of being a transformational and impactful team president worthy of your own place among the Packer greats is intact.

Sincerely,

Don Lee

I just don’t understand the critique that Gutey is passive, he traded back and then up for Alexander, then then traded up for Savage on successive drafts. He signed both smiths, Amos, turner, Douglas, Campbell, etc. frankly he’s done more maneuvering in his 4 years than Ted did in his entire tenure. Sure he’s missed on some evaluations but he’s been right more than wrong and that’s all anyone can ask. He righted a sinking ship and with the same qb produced 3 13 win seasons in a row and 2 #1 seeds. Really, what more can be asked? The only fault that I see is that he may have left the wr and te room too thin. His actions have consistently demonstrated that he’s not as concerned as the avg fan or talking head, in about 5-6 months we’ll find out who’s right.

What a kick to hear you two guys together again on a Packer podcast. I was hoping for The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot for the intro but I guess that’s asking for too much. My take on Gutey is he seems to be a solid talent evaluator yet still has not mastered the ability to manipulate the board to his benefit on draft day. As Bob pointed out, he has consistently overpaid for players who have not proven worthy to date. He obviously didn’t want to spend what was required to move up for a receiver in the 1st. Dime a dozen as another GBP writer used to say. Why he couldn’t move down in the 1st for additional options in the second to use on Watson seems to be a missed opportunity. Although we don’t know the back story of course, panic is a word I would agree with. Not a good look. Two 2nd’s for a guy with Watson’s production at NDSU can only be called a reach.

Bob, Thank you so much for the draft series. Without your series, the draft wouldnt be the same. I scan your summaries of the assessments before and after the Pack picks. Your info makes it easy to look at who is falling, why, and should the Pack jump for a pick or wait.

Agree w/ you 100% - Pack should have waited and jumped for either Watson or Piece was off the board and then traded up to get one of those two. They still could have drafted the safety they need with their 2nd 2nd round pick.

The Pack's GM panics, trades away too many picks, and leaves the team w/o the depth needed. Defense would have been a heck of allot better with the safety and throw in a pash rusher or OT with the pick we threw away to move up to get Love..... Plug those two holes and the roster would be in much better shape.

THANK YOU FOR THE JOB WELL DONE, all of your efforts, insights, and willingness to share!

Wow, that bit about Sam Williams was an eye-opener. I consume about as much media on the draft and I had never even heard of this guy. (I usually skip over the Scout's Nightmare section as a Packer fan.) I still can't find much on the incidents in question. I appreciate the draft series even more now.

I'd like a second podcast that goes deeper into the 75% of material that Bob did not and could not share. Either frame it as Part 2, rounds 3-7 or a look back into Bob's post draft articles of the past where he predicts impact now vs future. He could even look at Scout's Nightmares and see if any panned out...I'd also like to hear about other interesting players that Bob would've circled for the Pack in this year's draft....now on to the Monos and Ty podcast!

As always, I listened to every minute, and while I continue to shake my head at all of the negativity towards Rodgers, I enjoy these Podcasts. I also tracked down Tyler's article about Watkins https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2889029-what-sammy-watkins-believes

He could get his act together and be the guy Tyler thinks he will be, or he could continue to flake and be gone. Great signing because the Packers have so little vested in this gamble. Let's hope it is another Gutey home run, like Douglas and Campbell. I also looked it up, and he ran 10.4 100 meters in high school, just like Eric Stokes did. That would make him every bit as fast as Christian Watson, if he can still run like that. Still like confirmation that Campbell beat Watkins in a high school 100 meters.

Rodgers didn't really seem phased about no first round wr taken on McAfee show. He knew the team had 6 first round graded WRs and they were all gone. He's not a guy that can hide his true thoughts so I doubt he's seething at all.

Per usual, McGinn brings it, unfiltered and unashamed. Good for him.
