Bob been off his rocker with the Gutekunst opposition since they never hired his buddy John Dorsey after he got shanked by Andy Reid in a power struggle
Have a flax and chia seed shake and grunt it out of your system brother. 18 weeks of McGinn memories is worth the price on its own. Bob pulling out actual news articles and scouting reports from years ago to support his observations. Who does that while taking us through the game? Who cares at all to defend statements with outside sources anymore? Even Ty is supporting his statements with scouts. Thanks for rising to the challenge of your readers with this episode, Ty and Bob.
Bob: Right on Love comments, wrong on Gutey, WRONG on Lions play
Tyler: Right on Love comments, right on Gutey, WRONG on Lions play
The Lions play was a 7th grade gimmick that shouldn't be attempted by NFL teams. I recall the Bears had a similar play, I think it was the 80's (before the huddle rules): They would have a guy in the huddle, and then he would sprint toward the sidelines like he was leaving the field. Only he wouldn't, he'd stop right before going off the field, and then was wide open for (I believe) a touchdown. Next week, Bears run the same play. Penalty: Unsportmanslike conduct.
Clearly, the Lions point in having the players muddling around the ref was to confuse Dallas. If there is a 1% chance the Cowboys cover the play correctly, then just have 68 run to the ref, by himself, and clearly state that he's eligible. That's not what they did.
How about this trick play? Packers call timeout, but tell refs ahead of time that they are really saying "Tineout". Pretend like they are walking off the field. Then, quickly, go to the line and run a play. Is that how we want to see the games played? If the Refs actually gave the Packers a timeout, would we be bitching that they screwed up our genius play?
Don't feel bad, guys, you are almost always right. Only this time, you are wrong! :-)
I think Gutekunst has been mostly average as Bob says. I think the Love pick will be the defining pick that makes him a legend. The scout we hired from the Ravens had made a huge difference the last two years. With another strong draft, this team is going to open championship windows.
Anyone who's not blind or good at math can see Bob is right about Gutekunst. Gut will be lucky if the Packers field six total players this summer from his first four drafts, that consisted of a total of thirty six players taken. Now that is rather pathetic.
I totally disagree. You want an informed opinion or the pablum you get on broadcasts and hype shows on some outlets. You don’t have to like Bobs insights. The people he speaks to who are IN the NFL form his opinions. He’s sharing what he hears and delivering it with his spin. I don’t always agree, but I love his forthrightness!
So what do they do with Jaire? They play him of course. But do they bench him if he isn't hitting? They should. They should send him the message before the game: next man up is ready.
Bob knows more about football, and the Packers, than anyone posting. The jury is out on Love, imo. Let’s see how he does against high end playoff competition, when the pressure is really on. Minnesota was down a starting DL, top of the top three Edge rushers, a starting cornerback and had no pressure to out score Minnesota because they were playing a not ready QB. The Bears are going to knock off Green Bay on Sunday, making the second year in a row where the Packers were pushed out of the playoffs by a division foe.
When Love was drafted, I loved it. Remember, Rodgers had been hurt and/or had declining performance in the four years before. I assumed Love would have probably two years to learn behind Rodgers; three was a little longer than ideal, but it's worked-out pretty well. As Bob always says, draft picks miss all the time for everyone; and I'm not sure how to assess injured players. Also, aside from the Rodgers contract, COVID hit at just the wrong time for the Packers. The GM can assemble the roster, not sure how much he can be blamed for lack of Super Bowls - I like consistent wins.
I think I line up with Tyler more than Bob on the Brian talk. No GM is going to hit on every pick. Ideally you would like 4-5 guys to contribute by year 2-3. I think it's still way to early to say Van Ness is a nothing. He's a rotational player as a rookie, much in the same way Gary was when the Smith Bros were starting. I think with increasing reps, he can be a great compliment to Gary and he sets a better edge than Gary.
GoLongTD.com...One of the BEST "Go-To", Must-Read NFL web sites among dozens....i.e., Bob McGinn adds sage thoughts to Tyler's already-excellent acumen. PLEASE feel free to tell your friends about this site with a link, etc. -- if you care about ensuring the ongoing presence of this site....It's $50 annual fee is peanuts for the value it provides. Bob referring to Mundt as a "stumblebum"...priceless. Bob Unplugged on these is a hoot when he shoots from the hip a little.
About the Lions call, the referee may have screwed up. But the Lions should've caught the wrong player call over the PA. It sounds from all accounts that it was crystal clear that they announced No. 70, if we're going to fault officials for getting up in the moment, the Lions should get the same. Ultimately, it seems like an instance of getting too cute with the play call, and yeah, they should've kicked the PAT from the 7-yd line, or 4.
Also totally agree with Tyler on the fumble into end zone rule. If you don't like it, don't fumble the ball. The rule is well-known by now. The Twitter whining about this rule only makes me like it more.
Great pod. Was going to make the Dorsey reference but someone beat me to it. Wonder if Bob would rather have the position the Pack are in with Love or Lions with Goeff "going forward"? If Guty is average who are 14 better GMs? Some are obvious like the 49ers, Chiefs, Ravens. Just curious what other "average" GMs have done in the same time frame as Guty. Like Tyler said seems like more than a few passed on Love. Ted had his ups and down but he will always be revered for his pick of 12. The rest of the NFC North seems content to rent a QB or struggle to find one in the draft.
Great Pod. Remember the ‘89 season heartbreak well. Needing the Patriots to win or Minnesota to lose to get in was frustrating. Former Pack TE Novaselski’s TD clinched it for Minnesota v Cinci. Novaselski’s reception was an over the shoulder sliding on his knees in the back of the end zone. Thanks Bob and Ty. Well worth the subscription.
All of these comments are fantastic. Holy. Blown away.
We cannot thank you all enough for spending two hours (!) listening to us -- as Bob would say -- "GAB."

I can’t believe people pay $50/year for this trash.

Tyler? A bargain at double the price.
I watched the game tape, and here is my score:
Bob: Right on Love comments, wrong on Gutey, WRONG on Lions play
Tyler: Right on Love comments, right on Gutey, WRONG on Lions play

Bob has a hard time admitting when he is wrong. It really clouds his judgement when doing his analysis these days.

If Bahktiari's knee was a killer for the Packers and Gutekunst's legacy.
