Travon Walker is the No. 1 overall pick. So, how good is he?
The name might've made you do a double take. The Jacksonville Jaguars made this Georgia edge rusher the No. 1 pick. Here is how the scouts view him.
Travon Walker, an edge rusher from Georgia, was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ selection with the first pick of the NFL draft.
Here is how NFL scouts viewed him…
TRAVON WALKER, Edge, Georgia
Height: 6-5.
Weight: 270.
40: 4.59.
Wonderlic: 11.
Hometown: Thomaston, Ga.
Fact/stat: Third-year junior … made all 15 of his starts in 2021 when he had six of his 9 ½ career sacks.
NFC scout: “Middle of the first round. Dad is retired military. He’s got great size and athletic ability. Good overall strength, good quickness and change of direction. You can find a 5-technique. He’s going to be an edge guy.”
AFC scout: “His performance isn’t as consistent as Hutchinson, but talent-wise he’s got more.”
AFC scout: “People of this generation have forgotten about Mike Mamula. I’m not saying he’s Mike Mamula but his combine was that impressive. If he goes No. 2 you might be saying, ‘OK, maybe this guy is Mike Mamula.’ … He’ll be a 4-3 D-end, especially if he goes in the top 10. A 4-3 team will take him. They’re not going to take a 5-technique or try to stand him up. He’ll be more of a fire-zone guy that can drop. He had five (actually six) sacks this year, then showed up at the combine and had a phenomenal workout. It’s hard not to be overwhelmed by that … There’s a theory among all these coaches that run 4-3 that this guy is going to thrive in an attack front. He very well might. There are clips where he’s super impressive chasing the ball. He can run for a big man. But when I see him going second, first, third, fourth, I’m, like, ‘Wow, he’s going to go higher than his sack total.’ That’s unheard of. It’s crazy.”
