The franchise quarterback handbook
Jim Monos applies his scouting lessons learned from 2006, 2011, 2017 & 2021 to this year's group. Our resident scout worked with the Eagles, Saints and Bills. This 2024 QB class can be special.
Jim Monos, co-host of the “Go Long Show” podcast, spent nearly two decades in NFL front offices. He was an area scout with the Philadelphia Eagles (2001- ‘04) and New Orleans Saints (2005- ‘13) before taking over as director of personnel with the Buffalo Bills (2013- ‘17). Since December 2020, he has shared his scouting wisdom on the podcast.
One of Monos’ former colleagues with the Saints — Falcons GM Terry Fontenot — put it best: Monos sees the big picture. Paralysis by analysis is common amongst scouts. Trust your experience. Trust your instincts. Don’t let “track season” distract from the “grown-man” plays.
There’s a good chance quarterbacks could go 1-2-3-4 in this year’s draft. So, to make sense of the quarterback group — and kick off our 2024 NFL Draft coverage — let’s hand the pen over to Monos below.
As a reminder, all paid subscribers to Go Long will also gain access to Bob McGinn’s 40th annual draft series in mid-April.
Being first in line at Rodney Scott’s BBQ in Charleston, S.C., guarantees you the full selection of whatever meat combo you are craving. The best BBQ restaurants usually run the risk of running out of a popular meat, whether it is brisket at Lewis Barbecue in “Chucktown” or ribs at Rodney Scott’s. Waiting in line two hours before opening is common to make sure you get everything you desire.
Unfortunately for NFL general managers, being first in line does not guarantee you a thing.
It is not your goal to have the first pick in the NFL draft. Having the last selection in the first round is the desired scenario. That is where you want to be every year and that is where Brett Veach seems to have a reserved spot that is not for sale. The Chicago Bears hold the first selection and need GM Ryan Poles to bat lead-off like Rickey Henderson and knock this pick out of the park.
