Podcast: Why Nathaniel Hackett was a home-run hire
We welcome SI's Conor Orr to the show to share Doug Marrone memories, explain why the Denver Broncos nailed their HC hire, and break down his Cleveland Browns takeout story.
Doug Marrone has a unique way of connecting us all.
Thirteen years ago, Marrone took over the Syracuse football program and declared the position a dream job. Our esteemed podcast guest and myself covered it all at The Daily Orange then. A few years later, Marrone joined Jim Monos in Buffalo as the Bills’ head coach. The two also knew each other from their Saints days together.
So, naturally, that’s where we start with the Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated. With Marrone stories.
From there, Orr details the rise of Nathaniel Hackett from Syracuse… to Buffalo… to Jacksonville… to Green Bay… to, now, taking over as head coach of the Denver Broncos. He’s ready. Hackett combines both football intellect with the ability to relate to today’s players. No easy task. Orr also wrote a revealing story on the Cleveland Browns at SI two weeks ago. Did Hue Jackson tank? Technically, maybe not. But as SI discovered, the Browns sure made losing enticing with “four-year plan” bonuses.
