Podcast: Why Ja'Marr Chase is about to blow up
I'm joined by Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. to discuss the team everyone seems to have forgotten about. From Chase's next step to the team's overall culture, there's a lot to love.
This was the turnaround that nobody saw coming last season. The Cincinnati Bengals elevated from the sewer of the AFC North to win the entire conference and, by gosh, were they close to winning the whole thing.
How did the Bengals pull this off? What changes with this team in 2022?
Loved chatting with excellent Bengals beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic for this episode of the Go Long Podcast. Dehner Jr. has been all over this team’s rapid transformation and shares insight on everything that matters most right now:
Ja’Marr Chase’s rise. If you thought his rookie season was dynamite, you haven’t seen anything yet. Chase’s game (and usage) is expanding in a major way. Remember, this time last year Chase was in a mental funk.
Culture. Turns out, it matters. We’ve poked fun at “culture” talk in this space, but there’s no denying that the Bengals stirred up some magic in the locker room. How? Beyond the stars, they find a way to get the absolute most out of their role players.
Super Bowl LVI. Cincy was a split-second away from winning it all. Joe Burrow nearly pulled off an all-time Super Bowl moment with one audible. Oh my, how the narratives would’ve changed.
The defense! It’s not getting nearly enough love. In each of its postseason wins, the Bengals defense’s final possession ended with an interception. What makes this unit tick? Dehner Jr. explains.
