Podcast: The Carolina Panthers' quarterback carousel turns to... Baker Mayfield
OK, so things haven't gone according to plan. This trade gives everyone in Carolina a chance to keep their jobs and compete for a playoff spot. It's a smart move.
Baker Mayfield is free. Finally. This trade to the Carolina Panthers was long overdue.
We’ve spent many hours on the podcast discussing the Cleveland Browns’ offseason, so what about these Panthers? This is a franchise that has toggled from QB to QB to QB the last few seasons without much of a long-term plan. First, they dumped Cam Newton. Then Teddy Bridgewater was the answer. Then Sam Darnold. Then some weird combination of a broken-down Newton and PJ Walker.
Now, Mayfield? When it comes to finding a starting quarterback, the Panthers are essentially Charlie Kelly in the mailroom, shouting for “Carol!” in HR.
And yet it’s also true that if you’re not trying, you’re dying. The Panthers needed to acquire the former No. 1 overall pick. Mayfield supplies hope. On this episode of “Go Long with Dunne and Monos,” our resident GM explains why he is a big fan of the deal for Carolina. He sees a competitive roster, especially on defense. And you all know I’ve been a Baker Believer back to March. (Man. This could’ve been so, so simple for the Browns.)
Maybe Carolina isn’t scheduling a Super Bowl parade. This is a roster that can, however, compete for a playoff berth.
