Podcast: Sleeping in the office isn't the best idea
What a job. It's extremely difficult for every coach to find a work-life balance. What's the solution? Also, Steelers great Ramon Foster stops by to talk Mike Tomlin and AB. A two-part pod inside.
There is no proven formula. Operating at such a hellbent intensity played a major role in the rise of the Patriots dynasty. But if Bill Belichick’s methodology was perfect then his disciples would’ve gone on to win as head coaches elsewhere.
Alas, they do not. They’re routinely fired. They call third-and-9 QB sneaks, completely lose locker rooms and wind up back in New England.
There is no manual.
This spring, the head coach in Buffalo opened up on his difficulties striking a work-life balance. First, at an event with a Bills fan. Then, with the Buffalo News. Go Long Podcast co-host, Jim Monos, helped get McDermott his Bills interview five years ago. And as the Bills’ former director of personnel, he remembers that impulse for any staffer to camp out in the office. It’s a feeling that actually dates back to Andy Reid’s days in Philly where both he and McDermott started their respective football careers as young grunts.
What is the right balance? Monos, as always, has stories to share.
Also on this week’s episode from Hamburg Brewing Company, we discuss NFL offensive line coaches and why they need to have a few screws loose. Once more, we take your questions and… goodness. You all did not disappoint. Kudos to subscriber Jimmy Pawlowski for this gem: Would you rather have to fight a orangutan with a sword once a year, or a chicken every time you got into your car?
I choose orangutan. Monos chooses chickens.
It’s a lively discussion. We’re open to your take in the comment section.
We’ve got a double whammy of pods for you, too. I also caught up with my pal Ramon Foster this week. Inside that Steelers locker room, the longtime guard was always the voice of reason. Foster details what makes Mike Tomlin a rare motivator and offers his thoughts on Antonio Brown, which may surprise you. These days, Foster can be heard on the excellent “JMart and Ramon Show” in Nashville.
