Podcast: A rare peek behind the front office curtain
Former Bills GM Doug Whaley returns to relive the 2017 draft, his split with Sean McDermott and to preview Bills/Steelers in Week 1.
The 2017 NFL Draft helped shape the league in countless ways. We see that now.
When we launched Go Long last November, what went down at Pick No. 10 was central to our first story. Of course, the Buffalo Bills still made out pretty, pretty good in trading down. That entire draft helped kickstart a new era of winning — now Tre’Davious White, Dion Dawkins and Matt Milano are all on their second deals in Buffalo.
Getting an extra first-rounder by trading down also helped Buffalo move up for Josh Allen in 2018.
For a rare look at what transpired that weekend, former Bills GM Doug Whaley returns to the podcast. Whaley and my co-host Jim Monos also explain — in full transparency — why it didn’t work out with the head coach they hired: Sean McDermott. Both were fired the morning after that draft.
Also, this is a brutal time of year with teams whittling their roster down to 53. Just how difficult is it to cut a player?
