Detroit 31, New York Jets 24
Geno Smith and Jared Goff showed us what veteran quarterback pocket play looks like. It reminds me that it is a step below what some other teams have at the position, but this was still was playoff-quality QB play. Both teams have weapons. Jets rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq needs attention as a receiving threat. Stop me if you have heard this before — the Lions would be contenders with a defense. Until Detroit finds a way to stop somebody, Jared Goff needs to be perfect and it’s hard to see how they can make a run at the championship.
Indianapolis 19, Houston 17
The Texans throw for only 167 yards against a defense ranked 28th in opponent passer rating? Not good enough, CJ Stroud. Houston’s defense limited the Colts’ rushing attack in holding Taylor to 2.9 yards per carry (Jeanty-like), which is your opening for Stroud and Houston offense to take advantage and get the win. Yet, this Texans team is not synced up. Blaming the Houston O-Line is a weak excuse. The right QB (and O-Line coach) will make everything correct up front. If Daniel Jones is able to create again with his legs, this Colts offense is tricky to deal with.
